Second Year Course Choice
On the second year of Interaction Design programme, quarters 1 & 2, is a free period when you can choose
whatever courses you like.
This freedom can be confusing, and last year the info about this period came very late, so we thought it is not bad if you are aware of a few informations long before you have to make a choice.
This page is intended as a spiritual wiki, where 2d year students can post advice and suggestions. Please feel free to comment and we will publish the updates.
Scope of the choice
As it was described to us, the students can choose any course at
bachelor or
master levels alike. In order to do that, student should have 60 credits of "advanced level" i.e. master level. If you have followed the full standard courses of either
interaction design track or
game design track the first year, then you have those 60 credits.
Otherwise, you can only take master level courses.
Geographically, you can take courses in any swedish university. You must be aware, though, that you need to
apply yourself in most cases through
studera.nu, and check out the deadlines yourself.
Deadlines
As implied by the scope of the choice above, the deadlines vary greatly from university to university. There are however three moments to not miss!
-
Chalmers deadline: In
2009, it was in May to choose the courses on the student portal.
- Studera.nu deadline: 15th of April was
the deadline to course applications in
2009.
- if you choose applications at
Studera: you will need to
CONFIRM your applications by saying "yes" on the website, in
early august (. Keep your eyes peeled for this mail, when they ask you to reply. If you don't, they remove all your applications without notice. (true story)
Possible courses
One must remember that the most convenient option is to check out the studie portal of Chalmers (student.chalmers.se) and browse for courses. Some are available for Interaction Design directly, for other departments you will need to fill in a form (ask Anette Järelow for any questions).
Interaction Design
If the course belongs to the "normal" Interaction Design, no problem. Just select it on student.chalmers.se and verify that you have it in your upcoming courses. (individual information -> selected courses).
Suggestions from 2009:
Note: you can also take courses from the ID track which you didn't follow the 1st year. Ie. if you were game design track, you can take Physical computing for example, and vice-versa: f you were interaction design track, you can take Simulation Engines this time for example.
Chalmers (not in ID programme >> form)
If the course you want to take is on the student portal, but you can't select it directly, you need to download, print, fill in
THIS FORM and hand it in the main campus before the deadline. Verify later that you have it in your upcoming courses. (individual information -> selected courses).
Suggestions from 2009:
It-University / Gothenburg University
>> any course you would like from ITU should be applied to through studera.nu.
Suggestions from 2009:
For other courses at ITU, please visit
this recap page.
Other universities
There are some interesting courses that you can take in distance learning. It might be worth checking out on the respective websites (Kalmar, KTH, Hamstad, Malmö,...) or on studera.nu.
>> apply through studera.nu.

Important Notes
If you want to take a course in swedish. (not to learn the language, but to follow a course taught in swedish). In the case of GU you will have to fill in the requirements as stated
here and
there. The most important thing is to pass the TISUS language test. Keep your eyes peeled for when it is possible to pass it, and keep in mind it costs about 1600kr.
If you got kicked out of the studera.nu process for an application to
ITU courses, the person you want to ask what happened is Kari Wahll. Same if you want to apply to a course at the last minute at ITU. Otherwise, contact the responsible of the course to know if there are available slots for you.
